BAPTIST STUDENT FELLOWSHIP (BSF)
"By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another" (John 13:35, NIV)
The Baptist Student Fellowship motto is a reminder that the love and unity within the Christian community is the catalyst by which others will recognize the followers of Jesus Christ.
Our mission statement is to lead students for the commitment to Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord; involving them in the study of biblical truth and Christian discipleship; leading them to relate academic discipline to their Christian faith and involving them in responsible Church membership and denominational understanding and participation.
Among the yearly programmes include End of the year retreat / Re-union; Brothers and Sisters' Forum; Village outreaches; Sisters' Weekend and Praise, Thanksgiving and Testimony day.
The fellowship sincerely appreciates the efforts of the visionary leaders of the church in ensuring that the students' ministry of the church is given due attention.
While acknowledging Revd. (Dr.) Paul Odgon Davidson, the composer of BSF hymn entitled "Students rise now" it is our belief that students all over the nations will rise and build the kingdom in Christ Jesus. Meditate as you go through the BSF Hymn:
1. Students rise now, build the kingdom, Heed the master’s call today, Students rise up, follow Jesus, He’s the life, the truth the way. In the city, in the village In each near or distant land, Preach the gospel, make disciples, And fulfill the Lord’s command.
2. As true students of the Scripture, workmen unashamed and bold, Grow in knowledge deepen wisdom, God’s own truth is purest Gold. And with prayer and devotion, seek the master’s face each day. Let the kingdom come within you, And among you in all ways.
3. As the servants of the Saviour, Let God’s will be done on earth. Joining hands with other Christians, Share the message of new birth. We’re forgiven, we’ve been pardoned, Through the death of Jesus Christ, God’s own love gift has been offered, Our redemption sacrifice.
4. As the members of Christ’s body, Sharing in one common life, Bearing burdens, sharing sorrows
Use God’s love to banish strife. We’re united in the church now, Founded on the rock of faith. We have gifts now let us use them, That the church may grow in grace.
5. Jesus calls us as disciples. To give all our lives to Him, Bringing talents, time and money, And our futures yet unlived. He is building, let us join Him, Let us answer Heaven’s call. Students rise now, rise and follow, Follow Him as Lord of all.
You are richly blessed! Shalom!
BRIEF HISTORY:
BSF started as a forum under the leadership of Papa (Dn.) I.F. Adediran, when like-minded students of Union Baptist Church felt strongly for its need sometimes in 1992. It started with brother Amos Oyesoji Aremu (now Dn. Dr.) as the first president and sister Dayo Adegbite (now Mrs Dada) as the secretary. Some of the foundation members were sisters Bola Fanawopo (now Mrs. Ajose), Ronke Faminu, Wumi Oyeniran, Bro. Sunday Ajekigbe (now Pastor), Bro Yinka Adeniran, Bro Elijah Taiwo (now Pastor), Bro Yinka Oyelade (now pastor), Bro. Sanya Oguntomi, Bro Yinka Oladipupo and Sis Foluke Fadeyi among others.
BSF pioneer Patron and Patroness were Dn. Bisi Fadeyi and Mrs. Tinu Adeoye. Dn. T.A. Afolabi was the pioneer Adviser of the fellowship. The fellowship also had some senior friends and support personnel. Such persons are Dn. Femi Abayomi, Dn. Dimeji Babalola, Pastor Dele Adeleke, Pastor Emmanuel Akande (of blessed memory), Mr. & Mrs. Gbenga Oguntona, Mr & Mrs. A.O. Oke and Mr. & Mrs Biodun Akinlaja among others.
Unto God be the glory for the selfless efforts of the following presidents whom the Lord has helped in organizing evangelism outreaches with accompanied testimonies in Osogbo and its environs. Their immense contributions to the building of students development cannot be forgotten: They are:
a) Bro. Tunde Afolabi (Now Dn Dr.) - (1994-1996);
b) Bro. Mike Abioye (Now Rev) - (1997-1999) ;
c) Bro. Sunday Babawale - (1999-2004);
d) Bro. Bola Okunola - (2004-2008);
The current president of the fellowship is Bro Niyi Awopegba who took the mantle of the group in 2009. In collaboration with Rev. Olumide Kehinde's vision for students, a students’ Welfare and Advisory Committee was set up (by the church) to look into the affairs of students both at home and in school. This committee and the students' leaders regularly visit tertiary institutions. The result had been great. Thank God for visionary leaders in the church.
