1.0 Background History:

The Baptist Women Missionary Union of Nigeria (WMU), an auxiliary to the Nigeria Baptist convention (NBC) was established on 14th March, 1919 during the 6th annual meeting of NBC with the sole objectives of encouraging a Christian lifestyle of Prayer, Bible study, Personal service, enlistment of members, training, and soul winning.

In line with the organizational structure laid down by the WMU of the Nigerian Baptist convention, the WMU of the Union Baptist Church, Odi-Olowo, Osogbo was established in 1957 through the effort of Rev and Mrs. Duffer, missionaries at Newton campus, along Ilobu road, Osogbo. Rev and Mrs. Duffer led the organisation for seven years (1957-1963) after which they proceeded on missionary  journey to Jos. The organization thereafter relocated to Baba and Mama Boladale's residence in Araromi area in Osogbo for its weekly activities. The first indigenous WMU President for the church was late Mrs Comfort Oladebo Eebo who served for one year (January 1966 - December 1066) under the pastoral leadership of Pastor Olaleru. Some of the pioneer members of the organization as recognized at that time were Mrs Alabi, Mrs Fajehinsan, Mrs Eebo, Mrs Adenihun, Mrd Olabesinde, Mrs Adedepe (Jnr && Snr), Mrs Seriiki, Mrs Taiwo, Mrs Adepele, Mrs Abiola, Mrs Egbewowl, Mrs Dada, Dns Ojo, Mrs Ala Mrs Ogunkuade (Jnr & Snr) amongst others. Majority of them at the time of updating these records are of blessed memory.

2.0 Organizational Structure:

  • WMU comprises of four (4) organizations and four (4) fundamental pillars through which it operates. The four organizations are:
  • Sunbeam band (Children ages 4-9 years)
  • Girls Auxiliary (Girls ages 10 - 16 years)
  • Lydia Auxiliary (Girls age 17 till marriage who are not single mothers)
  • Women missionary society (All married and widowed women)

  • stewardship and service
  • evangelism and missions

 4.0 General Mission Activities

To the glory of God, some of the mission exploits embarked upon by the WMU Union Baptist Church, Odi-Olowo, Osogbo in the past, presently and ongoing include to mention a few:

  • Trip to Boriya mission field ( Dns Egbewole's team)
  • Regular worship at preaching station Erin Osun for accelerated growth of the church (Dns Egbewole's team)
  • Introduction of WMU monthly fasting and player as well as prayer meetings for pregnant women (Dns F.O Ogunwuyi’s team till date)
  • Monthly prayer meeting for women trusting God for the fruit of the womb (Dns Funke Taiwo’s team)
  • Social ministries embarked upon through evangelism and welfare visit to the Nigeria Correctional Centre, Ilesa and also the heper colony, Ogbomoso (All teams involved regularly during their tenure of office
  • Care and welfare of a child of one of the female in-mates of the Nigeria Correctional Centre for one year (Jan 2017 – Jan 2018 (Dns Shaniyi’s team)
  • Educational sponsorship of a Mali child with the sum of ten thousand (10,000) for school fees and care for one year (Dns Shaniyi’s team)
  • Welfare visit to the school for the handicapped, Iwo (Dns Shaniyi’s team, 2018)
  • Welfare visit to the school for the Blind, Ogbomoso, Oyo State (Dns Pharm Lara Ajayi’s team 2023)
  • Hospital Ministry Visitation were carried out regularly (All teams)
  • Participation with excellence in all the WMU activities at the Zion 1 Association, Osun Baptist Conference and the Convention Level (All teams)
  • Introduction of WMU Prayer request box and WMU prayer warrior team (Dns Lara Ajayi’s team)

5.0 Some of the Major Projects Carried Out by the WMU

Which has contributed to the development of the church are as highlighted below:

  • Purchase of a bus to aid evangelism
  • Construction of three bedroom flats down below the church auditorium serving as Guest House, offices for Associate Pastors and Stores (Dns F.O Ogunwuyi’s team)
  • Re-painting of the Old Church Auditorium and old children church (Dns F.O Ogunwuyi’s team)
  • Laying of foundation and building of the children church’s pastorium (Dns F.O Ogunwuyi’s team)
  • Purchase of an 18 seater Mazda Bus (Dns F.O Ogunwuyi’s team)
  • Purchase and installation of air conditioners to the Church Guest House (Dns Funke Taiwo’s team)
  • Equipping of the Senior Pastor’s Office with modern furniture and equipment (Dns Funke Taiwo’s team)
  • Tiling of the floor of the Old Church Auditorium (Dns Dr Agboola’s team)
  • Tiling of the steps to the four (4) entrances of the main church auditorium (2015, Dns O. Shaniyi’s team)
  • Purchase of six chairs and stools for the church altar (Dns Dr Agboola’s team)
  • Purchase of 2 sets of computers to UBC model college (2016, Dns O. Shaniyi’s team)
  • Purchase of another two set of computer and a printer for the UBC model college (2017, Dns O. Shaniyi’s team)
  • Renovation and expansion of WMU kitchen and the purchase of modern cooking equipments (2017, Dns O. Shaniyi’s team)
  • Donation of two hundred thousand naira only 200,000 naira only to the building committee as support for purchase of modern kitchen equipment into the new church pastorium (2018, Dns O. Shaniyi’s team)
  • Purchase of bundles of iron sheets for repair of roofing of the children's church pastorium (Dns O. Shaniyi’s team)
  • Purchase of ten (10) coolers to complement the ones in the WMU kitchen. (Dns Lydia Olarinde’s team)
  • Construction of a building designated as WMU mini-supermarket for selling of daily news provisions and confectioneries (Dns Lydia Olarinde’s team)
  • Award of educational scholarship totaling one million naira (N1, 000,000) only to the less privileged children in three (3) orphanage homes namely Kersey’s Children Home under the supervision of Bowen University Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, Free The Children Orphanage, Iwo, and The Lords Heritage Orphanage, Ede, all in Osun State
  • Procurement of a modern pulpit, two chairs, four stools and a grass carpet for the church altar (2024, Dns Lara Ajayi’s team)
  • Refurbishing and repairs of windows, electricals etc. in the rooms allocated to WMU and purchase of additional furnitures for special dedication of the room as WMU prayer prayer/couselling room for the use of members to set aside in prayer or for meditation (2024, Dns Lara Ajayi’s team)
